The Victorian Government's Korin Korin Balit Djak Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Strategy (2017-2027) provides and overarching framework for action to improve the health, wellbeing and safety of Aboriginal Victorians now and over the next 10 years. The purpose of this strategy is to realise the Government’s vision for ‘Self-determining, healthy and safe Aboriginal people and communities in Victoria. SMPCP has committed to continuing to support the work initiated through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Project.
The aims of the project are to:
- Build positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community members in the Urban South
- Improve service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Urban South
- Improve access/utilisation of Aboriginal and mainstream primary health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Activities of the project to date have included:
- Cultural awareness training for community health service staff
- Development of Reconcilliation Action Plans at community health services
- Development of service brochures for Central Bayside Community Health Services and Connect Health & Community
- Celebration of significant cultural events including Close the Gap Day, NAIDOC week and National Reconciliation week
- Establishment of a Koorie Family Gathering group
